Who Are We?

We have been around since the 1860s.  The “we” refers to the merger of two Mission Congregations – The Holy Cross mission, which began as an outreach by the women of Emmanuel Parish in 1860, and the St. Philip’s Mission, which grew out of the need to provide a place of worship for the “freed Negroes” soon after the Civil War.

Both Mission Congregations flourished on their individual trajectory until in 1966, when, due in part to declining membership at St. Philip’s, the Advisory Board of both Missions recommended the merger of both congregations.  St. Philip’s was deconsecrated on December 15th, 1966 and the altar and other items were returned to the Mother Church of Emmanuel.

Because of this background, Holy Cross presents a diversity of people.  Although located in some of the most beautiful mountains of Western Maryland, we share the same dilemma and the same opportunities for ministry as any Urban Parish Ministry.

We continue to believe that God has placed us in this place, and we trust His Holy Spirit to continue to strengthen us to do the work that has been given to us.
